How to build it
- Pick a hardwood 1×6 with no cracks or knots near the ends. Maple, cherry and walnut are ideal.
- Cut it to 12″ and mark a gentle radius on each corner by tracing a mug.
- Cut the corners, then sand the faces and edges from 80 to 220 grit, rounding the edges so they feel soft in the hand.
- Wipe with a damp cloth to raise the grain, let it dry, and sand once more at 220.
- Flood the board with mineral oil, wait 20 minutes, wipe off the excess, and repeat the next day.
